Making A Better Runner – Introduction

The “Making a Better Runner” Series of Blogs is not meant to be an exhaustive list of everything you should do to be a better runner. It is also not a scientifically backed up process which maps the way for everyone wishing to be better at a specific sport. We are all different, we are all organic beings. We learn, grow, recover and change at different rates. What works for some people will not work for others – or at least, it will work at a radically different rate. What this series IS, is a series of blogs based around general … Continue reading

Hydration

We are bombarded by the media with messages to drink water. The volume quoted by many is 2 litres per day, but that’s irrelevant here. What we’re interested in is why. Why do we need to ensure our intake of water is sufficient? To explain that, a little physiology is called for. And a word of caution – figures quoted in different sources vary, what we have included here are estimates and averages, approximations if you like. But it is a good illustration of what the percentages are like. Human bodies are approximately 70% water. Just think about that for … Continue reading

The Importance of Vitamin D

I often hear people saying they’re topping up their Vitamin D by spending time outdoors in the sunshine – it’s an odd thing to ask, but is it really that simple to do? DNS or DNF?

Did Not Start or Did Not Finish? This is a question that I think about a fair amount in terms of runners and cyclists that have been injured. When you have a race coming up, get injured training for it, or just generally in the run up to the big event, what do you do? Try and fudge through – start and see what happens, gambling on finishing and potentially making things a lot worse, with more time off and rehab afterward, of taking a DNS on the chin and getting on with rehab and training? I’ve been there myself, … Continue reading

How Exercise Shapes You (and others), Far Beyond The Gym

Over the past couple of years we’ve seen something incredible happen to our Personal Training clients. Not only has the exercise that they’ve done over the weeks, months and years given them a new outlook on life, improved their fitness and well-being in general, but – and here’s the magic – all those positive benefits have rubbed off on their near and dear ones. I was prompted to write about this a while ago, but it was a client who started training with us recently that spurred me to put my thoughts down and share this discovery. In the first month of training, … Continue reading

Tape. Does it stop me from falling apart?!

I read an interesting note on a blog recently. It was about a runner who had been injured and still went ahead with a run they had been training for. I don’t have a problem with that, everyone has important things to do, and if finishing that 10k at all costs is what it is, then so be it. The quote that caught my eye was that after the race, the runner said the therapists tape had “held her together through the run”. Now, I’m going to take a little bit of issue with that one. As humans we have … Continue reading
