DRY NEEDLING
Dry needling has been described as “western acupuncture”.
It is the use of acupuncture needles to reduce pain caused by “trigger points” as defined by Dr’s Travell and Simons. The needling helps to deactivate painful and overstimulated muscles throughout the body.
A number of trials have been conducted to discover the efficacy of this treatment with mixed results. On balance, and in our own clinical findings, Dry Needling appears to give relief to pain in a number of situations, and has a tangible effect on levels of pain from specific tender points.
On palpation of trigger points, it may be useful for us to use Dry Needling as a technique. We will check with you to ensure you are ok with the idea, and also to check that you do not have any particular problem which contraindicates you from treatment. All needles used are sterile single use needles and are used with an aseptic technique.
The microtrauma created by the needle within a muscle or soft tissue stimulates the body to heal. The brain identifies the area and directs various systems to help replace the damaged area with the same type of fresh tissue within a few days. In this way, needling is a way to stimulate self-healing – breaking down old tissue, and enabling the body to work on manufacturing newer, healthier tissue in its place.
Price: Dry Needling is incorporated into other treatments.
