Stitch – another hypothesis

This is quite a specific one. There seem to be a number of different versions of “side stitch”, and from personal experience, they seem to correlate to how much and how hard you are breathing. Previously we have posted about the possibility of psoas being implicated in stitch as it is a considerable hip flexor and gets stretched when running at higher speeds and greater exertion. A few weeks ago I decided that I would start running with a Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) again. You might be able to tell where this is going. Strapped on the HR monitor around … Continue reading

Hip flexor / adductor problem…?

Last August I ran Cracken Edge Fell Race. On the way down the final hill into the finish, I really let go and hammered it as hard as I could. It felt amazing just to run that fast. However, that was the beginning of something that has plagued me for quite a while. The day after the race I woke up with a pain in my lower abs/upper leg, like a muscle strain, but not quite. It was difficult to sit up to get out of bed and I found myself rolling over to drop onto the floor as an … Continue reading

Tape. Does it stop me from falling apart?!

I read an interesting note on a blog recently. It was about a runner who had been injured and still went ahead with a run they had been training for. I don’t have a problem with that, everyone has important things to do, and if finishing that 10k at all costs is what it is, then so be it. The quote that caught my eye was that after the race, the runner said the therapists tape had “held her together through the run”. Now, I’m going to take a little bit of issue with that one. As humans we have … Continue reading

Jasmin Paris – Paddy Buckley Support

It was going to happen at some point this year. Jasmin had already smashed the records for the Bob Graham – which I had the pleasure of supporting – back in April. She went on to take the overall record for the Ramsay Round, won a couple of Extreme Skyraces, came 6th in the UTMB (Ultra Tour de Mont Blanc) and generally did more long, gnarly running than a lot of Fell runners do in a life time. The obvious hole in her 2016 Palmares was the Paddy Buckley Round, and when the email came asking if I’d help support, … Continue reading

I’m injured. Should I rest to make it go away?

Injury. It’s pretty rubbish. Especially when it occurs doing exercise – something that is meant to make you healthier. There also seems to be a massive range of how quickly people get better and come back from injury. Some bounce right back and start doing their thing again, others flounder in the doldrums of injury and re-injury. Unfortunately when you do something nasty to yourself it doesn’t always take the same amount of time to heal, nor does it manifest itself in the same way, as it does in others. It’s not the same as a bit on your car … Continue reading

Massage Therapy for Vocalists

Vocals. They are our natural instrument with which we can interact with the world. Some of us do that in delightful ways, entertaining us with singing or acting, and others still inspire us with lectures and teachings about the world we live in. We all communicate with our voice, and the creative ones amongst us use their voice as their instrument. But why is massage therapy important if you use your voice to earn your living or entertain people? Just as a dancer or athlete seeks out regular maintenance massage, a vocal artist should also consider this as a tool to … Continue reading
